The Patriots and their quarterback situation has turned into one of the more intriguing storylines of the NFL Draft.
Will they select a quarterback in the first round? Could they even trade up for one? Will they wait until the middle rounds to take one? Or will they ride it out with Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer?
RADIO.com NFL analyst, and former member of the Patriots, Ross Tucker joined Mut at Night Monday and was asked if he believes the Patriots will take a QB in Round 1 Thursday night?
“Not really, not to me," he said. "I would be very, very surprised if they did that for a bunch of different reasons. No. 1, they’ve got a lot of other positions where they need to backfill guys that they have lost — tight end, wide receiver, front-seven on defense. They’ve got bigger priorities. I know everyone says quarterback is the biggest priority, but if you look at how many games they have won with quarterbacks taken later in the draft.
“I mean, Brady is obvious, we know that, sixth round. But, Matt Cassel was a seventh-round pick, Jacoby Brissett was a third-round pick, even Jimmy Garoppolo was a late second-round pick. They took Stidham in the fourth round last year, he did some really positive things in the preseason. It wouldn’t shock me if they took another quarterback in the middle rounds and had competition for Stidham and basically let those two young guys battle it out to see which one they like more as their inexpensive quarterback that they think they can win with and build the team around.
“But, this talk of them trading up in Round 1 or taking a quarterback in the first round, that would be very, very surprising to be. I just don’t see it.”
Names thrown around for them in the first round have been trading up for Tua Tagovailoa or potentially selecting Jordan Love at No. 23 overall.
