Darrelle Revis announces retirement, which proves even more Patriots made right decision not giving extension

After an 11-year NFL career, Darrelle Revis has called it quits.

The cornerback officially announced his retirement from the NFL via social media on Wednesday.

Revis' decision to retire now proves even more than at the time the Patriots made the right choice not to sign him to an extension following the 2014 season, Revis' only season in New England in which the team won Super Bowl XLIX. The cornerback clearly was a major part of the Super Bowl-winning team, but wanted a crazy amount of money as a free agent.

He ultimately signed a five-year, $70 million deal to return to the Jets, but was released in February of 2017.

Revis just wasn't the same player as he was before, as in 2015 and 2016 he recorded only six interceptions, including just one in 2016. Revis played five games with the Chiefs last season after finally signing late in the year, but it was very clear he didn't have much left in the tank.

Given his poor play since leaving New England, it's easy to say Bill Belichick and Co. made the right call not re-signing him in 2015.

Revis finishes his NFL career with 29 interceptions and will still go down as one of the best cornerbacks to ever play the game.
