The Patriots have made a trade.

According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, New England has traded safety Duron Harmon to the Lions. The move frees up just under $4 million in cap space and the Patriots will be receiving draft picks in return.

Harmon is one of the leaders of the defense, but with bringing back Devin McCourty for two years and over $20 million, along with Patrick Chung already being under contract for a cap hit of just under $6 million, some money needed to be shed there.

Terrence Brooks could potentially replace Harmon's playing time.

It seems this was primarily a move to free up cap space, and not much against Harmon.

New England had roughly $5 million in cap space going into the day.
