Is it a lock Cam Newton starts Week 1 for the Patriots?
Not quite, according to newly released odds from OddsChecker.
Right after Newton signed with the Patriots he was -500 to start Week 1 against Miami and Jarrett Stidham was +450. Now, Newton is -333 and Stidham is +333.
More bets have been placed on Stidham this week, according to the oddsmaker as well. Thirty-one percent of the bets this week have backed Stidham compared to 11 percent last week.
Both quarterbacks have been working with their teammates in players only workouts. Newton has spent time with Mohamed Sanu, N'Keal Harry and Devin Asiasi in California, while Stidham most recently was with Sanu, Brian Hoyer, David Andrews, Gunner Olszewski, Jakob Johnson and Dalton Keene in the Foxborough area.
Newton signed a one-year, veteran minimum deal after three months as a free agent following his release by the Panthers back in March.
It appears the Patriots would like it to be an open competition, but if Newton is healthy it makes most sense for him to start as not only does he probably give the Patriots the best chance to win this year, it gives Stidham another year to develop and still potentially be the quarterback of the future.
