The Patriots may be looking to add another running back in addition to Jeremy Hill this offseason.
According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the Patriots are hosting free agent running back Orleans Darkwa on Monday. The 26-year-old has been in the league for four seasons and had his best last year with the Giants. He ran for 751 yards and five touchdowns, while catching 19 passes out of the backfield for 116 yards.
Darkwa, who stands 6-feet tall, has been compared by some to Dion Lewis.
The Patriots already have a pretty crowded backfield with James White, Mike Gillislee, Rex Burkhead, Brandon Bolden and Hill, but there's no guarantee Gillislee and Hill are firmly on the 2018 roster, so adding another veteran like Darkwa could increase the competition in training camp.
As we've seen in the past, injuries can happen so it's important to have backup options in place. It is worth noting perhaps Darkwa would want to go to a team where he knows he has a better chance of playing.
