Bill Belichick made history this April when the Patriots selected N'Keal Harry in the first round at No. 32 overall, as it was the first time he had ever selected a wide receiver in the first round.
Speaking with FS1's Kristine Leahy, formerly of WEEI.com, on "Fair Game," Harry explained why he had no idea he was going to be selected by them and why he was so surprised when he got the call.
"No idea. I had no clue," Harry said. "I really was not expecting to go to the Patriots. Honestly, I was thinking I would either go to the Seahawks, or I was thinking the Ravens, the Raiders, so the Patriots I was not expecting. … Just because the draft day was kind of weird. Real nerve-wracking and once they got to No. 32, we were watching the TV and I heard the announcers talking about wide receivers and how they don't traditionally go wide receiver, and how Bill (Belichick) has never picked a wide receiver (in the first round), so I was like, 'It's over. Just get ready for Day 2.' Then the call came in."
After spending the last two months or so with the Patriots, Harry said it's been a dream come true.
"It has been great just to say I am in the NFL. Actually be in a locker room and put the gear on, it means a lot to me," he said. "It's been great so far."
Being the first wide out ever selected in the first round by Belichick comes with a lot of pressure, but the Arizona State product is ready for whatever is to come his way.
"Yeah, I am," Harry said. "I know New England fans hold the Patriots to a very high standard. Very critical. That is something I will be ready for. You have to be head-strong and prepared for it."
Harry figures to be the No. 2 or 3 receiver for the Patriots this season.
