The Patriots now have only two quarterbacks on their roster.
According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the Patriots have released Cody Kessler.
[UPDATE 5 p.m.]: The team made the move official.
Kessler did not appear in any games last season, but was added to the roster Sept. 25, released Oct. 15 and then re-signed Oct. 28. He backed up Tom Brady and Jarrett Stidham.
Now, the Patriots have just Stidham and Brian Hoyer on the active roster.
It would not be a surprise at all to see the team select a quarterback in the draft, likely in the middle-to-late rounds, and also potentially add a cheap veteran for an extra body in training camp.
Kessler, a third-round pick in 2016, has appeared in just 17 NFL games.
