The Patriots have the fewest amount of cap space in football at less than $1 million, but are now trying find small ways to free up some money.

One of those is reworking contracts, which they have done with a veteran running back.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, Rex Burkhead and the Patriots have reworked his contract for this season. Burkhead gets $550,000 to sign and drops his base salary from $2.5 million to $1.05 million with $400,000 available in roster bonuses, which is down from $500,000.

The move freed up $981,250 in cap space.

Burkhead was previously on the books for close to $4 million against the cap in the final year of his deal with New England.

The 30-year-old has been with the Patriots since 2017.

The move likely means Burkhead will be on the team in 2020 and not be a potential veteran cut during training camp.
