FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Red Sox do not open the regular season until Thursday in Tampa, but after a few moves on Monday, it appears the Opening Day 25-man roster is set.
Brandon Workman was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket and then right-hander Justin Haley was re-assigned to minor league camp.
The team also placed Drew Pomeranz, Eduardo Rodriguez and Steven Wright on the 10-day disabled list, which means the team officially has 29 players in major league camp, but four of them will likely be going on the disabled list in the coming days. Those players are: Dustin Pedroia, Marco Hernandez, Austin Maddox and Tyler Thornburg.
Although the final Opening Day roster hasn't been officially announced, Bobby Poyner and Marcus Walden have made the team.
Speaking Monday afternoon, manager Alex Cora said how special it was tell a veteran like Walden he's made the team.
"You go to Baseball Reference and he signed in 2007 with the Blue Jays and he goes through the whole process," he said. "There was one year there that he was released by the Reds and he only had one start in Pensacola in Double-A. He gave up five in three innings and then he pitches for Lancaster in the Atlantic League. He goes through the whole journey of Winter Ball. He's 29 and probably — at one point he doubted if that day was going to come. The first thing, I was like, 'I am not going to beat around it. I am just going to tell you are a big leaguer.' His reaction was outstanding. That was awesome."
Here is what the 25-man roster should look like Thursday in Tampa.
Pitchers (12): Chris Sale, David Price, Rick Porcello, Hector Velazquez, Brian Johnson, Craig Kimbrel, Carson Smith, Matt Barnes, Heath Hembree, Joe Kelly, Bobby Poyner, Marcus Walden
