The Red Sox have added some organizational depth at second base.

On Wednesday, the team announced it has signed veteran second baseman Brandon Phillips to a minor league deal. The 36-year-old hasn't played for a team (minor or major leagues) this season, but has played for four teams in his 16 years in the big leagues.

Last year between the Braves and Angels he hit .285/.319/.416 with 13 home runs and 60 RBIs.

It seems like the Red Sox are protecting themselves with depth at the position in case Dustin Pedroia has to miss even more time than first thought.

Phillips is a three-time All-Star with his most recent appearance coming back in 2013.

[UPDATE 6:00 p.m.]: It's worth noting Ken Rosenthal is reporting Phillips will play third base for Triple-A Pawtucket.
