The Patriots appear to have an interest in a potential late-round running back.

According to Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com, the Patriots met with running back Ito Smith from the University of Southern Mississippi on Wednesday. At his pro day, also on Wednesday, his 40 times ranged from 4.45 to 4.54 seconds, which was faster than many expected. During drills he showed the ability to catch passes out of the backfield.

Standing 5-foot-9, 195 pounds, he ran for 1,415 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior this past fall, while catching 40 passes out of the backfield.

In his four years at the school, he rushed for 4,538 yards and 42 touchdowns.

Smith is expected to be a late-round selection, but did get an invite to the Senior Bowl.

The Patriots could potentially use a late-round pick on a running back as they look to get younger at the position.
