Could the Patriots replace Danny Amendola with someone even better?

According to Yahoo! Sports'. Jordan Schultz, Jordy Nelson knew he was being released by the Packers, and was already targeting the Patriots as a potential suitor. Schultz also said the Raiders, Ravens, 49ers and Seahawks are all expected to make a push for the 32-year-old.

The report is interesting on a few levels.

No. 1, Nelson and Amendola are not similar players. Nelson is more of a Chris Hogan-type and doesn't run as many routes out of the slot as Amendola does. No. 2, the money. Nelson was released because he would have had a cap hit of $12.5 million for the upcoming season, as he still had one-year left on a four-year, $39 million deal.

The Patriots don't have a lot of cap space themselves, or a big need at receiver, so does it really make sense for the Patriots to target Nelson? If he's willing to take a massive pay cut it's a different story, but it's hard to imagine given the interest he will likely get.

In 15 games this past season, Nelson had 53 catches for 482 yards and six touchdowns. He was a monster in 2015 and 2016, as he had over 1,200 yards receiving in each of those years and combined for 27 touchdowns.
