FOXBORO -- In the closing minutes of the first half, the Patriots lost tight end Rob Gronkowski to a head injury.

The tight end attempted to make a catch up the seam, but was leveled by Jaguars safety Barry Church on a helmet-to-helmet hit. He was flagged for unnecessary roughness and Gronkowski immediately went to the locker room. He didn't come out with the rest of the team after halftime and was listed as questionable before later being ruled out.

According to the Boston Herald's Karen Guregian, Gronkowski is in the concussion protocol, but there's optimism he will be able to play in the Super Bowl.

Of course there's plenty of time between now and the game and his status likely will not become clear for at least a few more days, but the fact there's two weeks between now and the game it's a positive for the Patriots tight end.
