After Malcolm Butler was benched in Super Bowl LI, many wondered how it would impact his status as a free agent and potentially deter teams from signing him to a big-money contract.
In the end, it didn't really matter as Butler signed a five-year, $61 million contract with the Titans.
Speaking at the NFL coaches breakfast Tuesday in Orlando, Titans coach Mike Vrabel said he didn't talk to Bill Belichick, his former coach, about what happened, but did talk to people close to Butler about his character.
"I didn't ask Bill why he didn't play him. I don't know if anybody else knows why he did or didn't play other than the head coach. I don't know. I didn't ask Bill," Vrabel said via the Boston Herald. "We felt like we knew Malcolm well enough. People that we trusted that we talked to about his character, about his work ethic, about the teammate that he was. We're excited to have him."
It doesn't seem like Vrabel is concerned.
"We talked about character, we talked about him as a person, him as a teammate," he said. "There's decisions coaches make, people make for their team. That was a Patriot decision. Malcolm, he's a Titan now."
The Titans will host the Patriots next season.
