While it was reported Tom Brady received a contract extension through 2021 on Sunday, the reality is Brady isn't signed beyond 2019.
According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the new deal includes a provision that does not allow the Patriots to franchise or transition tag him for the 2020 season. In addition, the final two years automatically void on the last day of the 2019 league year, which means he will become a free agent.
The two-year extension appears to solely have been put in so that the team could get more cap space for this season and so Brady could make more money in 2019.
This will be the first time in his career that Brady will be playing on an expiring contract.
