Will Bill Belichick name Patriots starting QB before Week 1 vs. Dolphins?

Bill Belichick has not shed any light on who his starting quarterback will be this season even though it almost certainly will be Cam Newton.

Appearing on Ordway, Merloni & Fauria Monday, Belichick was asked if he will name a starter at all before Week 1 against Miami and if the team will carry three quarterbacks?

"Well again, we'll do what is best for the team, like we always do," he said. "We'll just take things day-to-day and if we have to make decisions and evaluations and roster moves and so forth then we'll make them. But, things can change between now and then. Sometimes you just never know how it is going to go. We'll make them when we have to."

While Newton is the presumed starter, Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer are still in the mix and will in all likelihood be on the roster.

The hosts tried to get Belichick to name a leader in the clubhouse for the starting job, but Belichick wouldn't budge.

"Yeah, we still have a lot of good competition on the field at all the positions," he said. "We'll let the players keep competing and see how it goes."

Newton missed practice Monday with a reported excused absence, but will he be back on the field Tuesday?

"We'll see," Belichick said.

As always, and with pretty much everything, Belichick is keeping everyone guessing.
