Apparently the Bruins remember. The team announced Thursday that it signed the goal-scorer, Martin Bakos, to a one-year, two-way contract with a cap hit of $700,000 at the NHL level.
The 28-year-old center/winger spent last season with the Czech Hockey League's Liberec Bili Tygri HC, where he scored 14 goals for 40 total points in 52 games. The 6-foot-2, 194-pound Slovakia native has also spent some time in the KHL -- a 2016-17 stint with Kunlun Red Star resulting in eight goals and eight assists through 55 games played.
After his shootout goal against France, though, he's mostly known for his international play. He finished the 2018 World Championships with two goals and two assists, and he represented Slovakia in the 2018 Olympics with one goal and one assist in four games. He's represented his country in 56 games, with 13 goals and 13 assists for 26 points.
Anything could happen at training camp, but it seems he's getting a shot at providing depth for the Bruins a la Brian Gionta and Kenny Agostino -- both of whom general manager Don Sweeney said won't be back.
As with most inexpensive, one-year deals: Why not? Just maybe think twice about tossing this one onto the ice during playoff overtime.
