Here's one for the book on freak injuries. Bruins general manager Don Sweeney announced on Tuesday that David Pastrnak will miss at least two weeks after injuring his left thumb in a fall at a sponsorship dinner.
The fall took place Sunday night. According to Sweeney, Pastrnak was walking to his transportation after the event when he fell and suffered the thumb injury. Pastrnak has already undergone a procedure on the thumb and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Sweeney said he is expected to play again this season.
The injury is obviously a huge blow for the Bruins, as Pastrnak leads the team in goals (31) and points (66), numbers that put him in the top 10 in the NHL in both categories. It doesn't help that the Bruins are already thin when it comes to scoring wingers behind Pastrnak on the right and Brad Marchand on the left.
The Bruins wouldn't appear to be in any real danger of falling out of a playoff spot -- they're currently fourth in the conference (third in their division) and eight points ahead of ninth-place Carolina -- but it could put even more pressure on Sweeney to make a deal before the league's Feb. 25 trade deadline. Sweeney, for his part, said Tuesday that Pastrnak's injury won't affect his trade deadline approach.
