Bruins sign Jaroslav Halak to 1-year extension

Jaroslav Halak has proven to be the perfect No. 2 goalie for the Bruins, and now he'll be sticking around for at least one more season. General manager Don Sweeney announced Friday that the team has signed Halak to a one-year extension worth $2.25 million.

In his two seasons in Boston, Halak, who turns 35 on May 13, has posted a stellar .921 save percentage and 40-17-10 record while starting 43 percent of the Bruins' regular-season games. That kind of performance has allowed the Bruins to keep Tuukka Rask fresh, a strategy that clearly paid off last spring when Rask was healthy and playing at a high level throughout the postseason.

There had been some thought that perhaps the Bruins would move on from Halak and turn to a cheaper in-house option next season with prospects Dan Vladar and/or Jeremy Swayman -- both of whom are coming off excellent seasons for the Providence Bruins and University of Maine, respectively -- getting a shot at the backup job, but clearly they think highly enough of Halak to want him back for another season, while allowing Vladar and Swayman to continue to develop.
