Charlie McAvoy suffers lower body injury vs. Canadiens

Ideally, Saturday night would've been a casual stroll to an easy two points against the lowly Canadiens and everyone would've gone home feeling good.

Instead, Bruins fans will now be holding their breath awaiting further updates on stud defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who left the ice 37 seconds into Saturday's game after appearing to get slashed on the the foot by Brendan Gallagher. The Bruins announced a short time later that McAvoy had a lower body injury and was unlikely to return to the game.

Obviously, losing the McAvoy would be a big blow to a Bruins team that's already without Patrice Bergeron for at least two weeks. The rookie has played 22:29 per game this season, second on the team behind only his veteran D partner, Zdeno Chara.

Here's a look at the play:

UPDATE: A different angle makes it look as though Gallagher actually didn't land a slash on McAvoy after all, and only tripped him. That makes a bit harder to guess what the injury is, other than the Bruins' generic "lower body" diagnosis.

Another angle from Habs broadcast. Clearly doesn’t catch McAvoy so Charlie must have twisted something or landed awkwardly. pic.twitter.com/X3AF5Smriu
