Manny Machado reportedly agrees to massive deal with Padres

Finally, one of baseball's two big-name free agents has a new home. According to multiple reports, Manny Machado has agreed to a 10-year, $300 million deal with the San Diego Padres. The deal, which is the largest for a free agent in the history of American sports, reportedly has an opt-out the 26-year-old Machado could trigger after the fifth year.

It's worth noting that Dennis Lin of The Athletic reported shortly after the initial reports that the deal isn't finalized, but fellow Athletic reporter Ken Rosenthal says the denial from the Padres front office is just semantics.

In what's becoming a troubling trend for baseball, Machado's free agency dragged on for months and into the start of spring training. The same thing happened last year with J.D. Martinez, who finally agreed to a deal with the Red Sox on, coincidentally, Feb. 19.

Bryce Harper, whose deal could ultimately top Machado's, remains unsigned, as do a number of other free agents, including Craig Kimbrel.

Machado has hit at least 33 home runs and driven in at least 86 runs in each of the last four seasons. He spent the first six and a half seasons of his career with the Baltimore Orioles before getting traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers before the 2018 trade deadline. He helped lead LA to the World Series, where they ultimately lost to the Red Sox in five games. Machado struck out against Chris Sale to end the series, which you can watch again and enjoy below.
