After prospects Ty Buttrey and Williams Jerez were traded for second baseman Ian Kinsler on Monday, the Red Sox were left to sort out a few minor league roster spots.
Here’s a recap of a few promotions and additional news from the farm system over the last few days.
-- The Red Sox promoted pitchers Travis Lakins and Matthew Gorst to Triple-A Pawtucket. Lakins, 24, was the Red Sox sixth-round pick in the 2015 draft. After spending the last two seasons battling a fracture in his elbow, the righty registered a 2.61 ERA through 38 innings (26 games) with Portland this year. He has also totaled 42 strikeouts to go with a 1.05 WHIP and a .191 opponent batting average. Since moving to the bullpen after six starts, Lakins has struck out 22 batters in 21 innings and has allowed two total runs in that span.
-- Gorst, 23, pitched nine scoreless outings in Portland (20 1/3 innings as a reliever), after posting a 1.29 ERA in High-A Salem. The righty pitched two scoreless innings in his Triple-A debut against Syracuse on Tuesday. Gorst has struck out 15 batters through his last 10 appearances. He has a total of 48 strikeouts on the season to go with a 0.89 ERA (50 2/3 innings), 0.91 WHIP, and a .179 opponent average.
-- Jarren Duran, the Red Sox seventh-round pick this past June, was promoted to Single-A Greenville on Wednesday. Duran, 21, hit .348 with five doubles, 10 triples, two home runs, and 12 steals in 37 games with short-season Single-A Lowell. He went hitless in only five of those appearances. The second baseman has hit .381 in his last 10 games, fueled by a 13-game hitting streak.
-- Second baseman Brandon Phillips and first baseman Adam Lind each have the option to opt-out of their minor league deals on Wednesday and elect for free agency, according to MassLive. The two veterans are currently playing in Triple-A. Phillips is hitting .229 in 10 games, while Lind has hit .216 with seven home runs in 45 games.
