Thursday Red Sox Farm Report: Adam Lind homers again for PawSox

Here’s what happened in the Red Sox farm system on Wednesday.

TRIPLE-A PAWTUCKET RED SOX (38-39), L, 3-1 at Buffalo

-- The PawSox offense could not muster the runs needed to support starter William Cuevas who surrendered five hits while giving up three runs (two earned) in 6 1/3 innings of work. The 27-year-old righty struck out five in the loss, which drops his record to 5-5 and raises his ERA to 3.65.

-- Adam Lind tallied the team’s lone run with a solo home run, his seventh of the year, in the fourth inning. Rusney Castillo finished the game 1-for-4.

-- Bobby Poyner and Ty Buttrey both threw scoreless frames in relief. Poyner (2.41 ERA) pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief for Cuevas and struck out one, while Buttrey (1.85 ERA) pitched one inning and struck out two.

DOUBLE-A PORTLAND SEA DOGS (29-48), L, 11-6 at New Hampshire

-- Despite its 13 hits, Portland could not contain New Hampshire’s bats to secure a win. Starter Matthew Kent was tagged with 10 runs, all earned, in four innings of work to jump his ERA to 3.80. The lefty now owns a 5-5 record.

-- In his 17th game in the minor leagues as he works his way back, reliever Tyler Thornburg allowed one run in two innings of work while striking out two. The 29-year-old now holds a 5.28 ERA between Portland and Pawtucket.

-- Johnny Bladel went 3-for-4, scoring two runs for the Sea Dogs and driving in one RBI. Nick Lovullo added two RBIs of his own on two hits and lifted his season average to .218. Austin Rei went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI to raise his average to .214. The catcher has hit .302 in his last 10 games.

HIGH-A SALEM RED SOX (35-39), L, 4-1 vs Carolina

-- Salem avoided a shutout thanks to an RBI single in the eighth inning by Ryan Scott (1-for-3). The Red Sox stranded 13 runners on base while finishing 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Santiago Espinal (2-for-5) and Tyler Hill (3-for-4) each tallied doubles in the loss. Espinal (15) and Hill (11) are third and fourth on the team in doubles.

-- Salem’s leader in extra-base hits, Bobby Dalbec, finished the game 2-for-4, doubling once and scoring a run. The 22-year-old has a .222 average through 70 games (243 at-bats), and has recorded 38 runs and 53 RBIs on 54 hits (19 doubles, 14 home runs).

-- MLB.com’s No. 3 Red Sox prospect Tanner Houck fell to 3-9 after pitching 5 2/3 innings, giving up  three runs on five hits while striking out seven. The 2017 first-round selection has a 5.16 ERA to go along with 52 total strikeouts.
