
Here’s what happened in the Red Sox farm system on Wednesday.
TRIPLE-A PAWTUCKET RED SOX (40-44), W, 6-5 at Rochester
-- The PawSox used a four-run top of the ninth to ruin the Red Wings’ Fourth of July and secure a come-from-behind road win. Pawtucket scored all six runs in the last two innings, and fought through three consecutive at-bats where it was down to its final strike. Mike Miller (2-for-4, .224 average), hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 3-2. Pinch-hitter Rusney Castillo (.305) came up clutch in the ninth with a two-out, bases loaded, two-run single to make it 5-4 and Tzu-Wei Lin (2-for-5, .378 average in last 10 games) completed the comeback with a follow-up two-run single to put the PawSox ahead for good.
-- Starter Jalen Beeks, who received a no-decision, gave up two home runs and three earned runs through 5 1/3 innings, but still struck out eight. The 24-year-old has a 3.05 ERA in 15 Triple-A starts this year and has struck out 110 batters in 82 2/3 innings. Beeks also has a .214 opponent average and a 1.08 WHIP.
-- In relief, Fernando Rodriguez Jr. earned the win by pitching 2 2/3 innings of two-run ball, while giving up one hit and two walks. The 34-year-old is 3-1 on the season. Ryan Brasier secured his 12th save of the season by striking out two. The 2007 sixth-round pick by the Angels now owns a 1.37 ERA, with opponents hitting .214 against the righty.
DOUBLE-A PORTLAND SEA DOGS (32-51), W, 7-5 at Hartford
-- Luke Tendler’s pinch-hit, two-run home run in the top of the ninth lifted the Sea Dogs to a win. The 26-year-old, drafted in the 29th round in 2014 by the Rangers, is second on the team in home runs with nine. Tendler has also hit .382 in his last 10 games (.270 on the season).
-- Tony Renda knocked in two RBIs on a 2-for-5 day and scored one run. Austin Rei shook off a rough stretch of at-bats against Binghamton (2-for-12 in the series), and posted a 3-for-4 game with a double and an RBI.
-- Reliever Jordan Weems held Hartford scoreless in 1 2/3 innings of work to lock down the win. The 25-year-old also struck out three, and leveled his record to 2-2.
-- Starter Teddy Stankiewicz was hit with four earned runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Adam Lau gave up a game-tying solo home run in the eighth while pitching 1 2/3 on relief, allowing three hits to go along with three walks. Stankiewicz, drafted in the second round by the Red Sox in 2013, now has an ERA of 5.05 in 14 appearances with Portland (eight starts). Lau’s ERA jumps to 4.54.
HIGH-A SALEM RED SOX (38-43), L, 7-1 at Potomac
-- Following a first inning sacrifice fly by Bobby Dalbec, Salem was shutout for the rest of the game, and went hitless as a team after the fourth inning. Dalbec went 1-for-3 with a double, tallying his extra-base hit total at 38.
-- C.J. Chatham, MLB.com’s No. 10 Red Sox prospect, went hitless in three at-bats to snap a four-game hit streak. The 23-year-old from Florida is still hitting .341 over the last 10 games, and currently has a .308 average in 40 games with Salem.
-- Starter Daniel Gonzalez gave up four runs in five innings to drop his record to 7-2. His ERA spiked to 3.21 in the loss. The 22-year-old has started five games in High-A, towing 70 innings while striking out 60.
SINGLE-A GREENVILLE DRIVE (31-52), W, 4-2 at Columbia
-- Denyi Reyes picked up his seventh win of the season. The 21-year-old pitched an eight inning start where he surrendered only two earned runs on five hits. Reyes didn’t allow a walk and struck out five. In 13 starts with Greenville, the righty from the Dominican Republic has an ERA of 1.93, good for fifth place in the South Atlantic League.
-- In his 16th appearance of the year, Dominic LoBrutto earned his second save of the season, lowering his ERA to 5.40.
-- Ryan Fitzgerald finished a home run short of the cycle on a 3-for-5 evening, and raised his average to .283. First baseman Garrett Benge also went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs in his second game since being promoted from Single-A Lowell.
SHORT SEASON, SINGLE-A LOWELL SPINNERS (9-10), W, 7-4 at Connecticut
-- Jarren Duran scored three runs while going 3-for-4 on the day with a triple and an RBI. The 21-year-old is now hitting .361 in 15 games since being drafted in the seventh round by the Red Sox last month.
-- Devlin Granberg, drafted in the sixth round, before Duran, finished the evening 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Granberg is hitting .245 in 14 games played.
