After being canceled for the first time ever in 2020 and being delayed until the fall this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Boston Marathon finally returned on Monday.
Kenya’s Benson Kipruto won the men’s marathon for the first time with a time of 2:09:51. Kipruto is the 23rd Kenyan to win the men’s marathon and the third in the last four races.
Diana Kipyogei made it a sweep for Kenya, winning the women’s marathon for the first time with a time of 2:24:45. She is the 13th Kenyan woman to win Boston.
Princeton, Mass. native Colin Bennie was the highest American finisher in the men’s race, coming in seventh. Nell Rojas, a native of Boulder, Colorado, finished sixth in the women's race, making her the highest-finishing American there.
In the wheelchair divisions, Marcel Hug won the men’s race for the fifth time and Manuela Schar won the women’s race for the third time. It is the second time the two Switzerland natives have swept Boston, as they both won in 2017 as well.
Americans Daniel Romanchuk and Tatyana McFadden finished second in the men's and women's wheelchair races, respectively. Romanchuk won the race in 2019, while McFadden has won Boston five times.
