Sports 7 Prospects With Former MLB Stars As Fathers

7 Prospects With Former MLB Stars As Fathers

By Tim Kelly, Audacy

Not only have the Toronto Blue Jays built an exciting lineup full of former top prospects, but many of those young talents have last names familiar to even the most casual of baseball fans.

Third baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., of course, is the son of Hall of Fame right fielder Vladimir Guerrero Sr. Back when he was just Vladimir Guerrero, the Dominican-born outfielder hit .318 with 449 home runs during his 16-season MLB career, the most notable portions of which were spent with the Montreal Expos and Los Angeles Angels.

Second baseman Cavan Biggio also has a Hall of Fame father, as his dad, Craig, racked up 3,060 hits in a 20-season career that was spent entirely with the Houston Astros.

On a normal team, Blue Jays' shortstop Bo Bichette would have the father who was the most successful major leaguer. While his dad, Dante, isn't a Hall of Famer, he was a four-time All-Star with the Colorado Rockies during a 14-season career.

Though it may seem like it, the Blue Jays haven't hogged all of the talented young players who have famous fathers in the league. Here's a look at some prospects whose last names will stand out:

Daz Cameron

Daz Cameron, Son of Mike Cameron

The Tigers acquired Cameron, a 2015 first-round pick by the Houston Astros, in the August 2017 trade of Justin Verlander. Though he hit just .214 at Triple-A last season, Cameron is the No. 7 prospect in the Tigers' system after hitting 13 home runs and driving in 43 runs in 2019. Daz's father, Mike, was a journeyman outfielder that made an All-Star team and won three Gold Glove Awards in 17 years as a major league center fielder.

Griffin Conine, Son of Jeff Conine

Conine elected to attend Duke University after the Miami Marlins made him a 31st-round pick in the 2015 MLB Draft. That move paid off, as the Toronto Blue Jays selected him in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft, and he's currently the No. 14 prospect in the team's farm system. Griffin's dad, Jeff, is arguably the most popular player in the history of the Marlins' franchise, as he was a member of both the 1997 and 2003 World Series Champion teams.

Yorvis Torrealba, Son of Yorvit Torrealba

Yorvis Torrealba was kidnapped as a child, and happened to attend Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, graduating a few years before the shooting that rocked the world in February of 2018. Despite all that, he managed to get drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 20th round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of University of Tampa, a Division-II program. His father, Yorvit, was the starting catcher for the 2007 Colorado Rockies, who won 21 of 22 games to win their first National League pennant ever.

Nick Gordon, Son of Tom 'Flash' Gordon

The Twins selected Gordon with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. Not only is he the younger brother of Seattle Mariners' shortstop Dee Gordon, but the son of Tom "Flash" Gordon. "Flash" spent 21 years as a major-league reliever, making All-Star teams as a member of the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies. Stephen King even wrote a book entitled "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon," which came out in 1999, when Gordon was the closer for the Boston Red Sox.

Dan Wilson

Eli Wilson, Son of Dan Wilson

Though he was initially drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 37th round of the 2016 MLB Draft, Eli Wilson chose to attend the University of Minnesota. After three seasons with the Golden Gophers, Wilson was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 16th round of the 2019 MLB Draft. His dad, Dan, spent 12 of his 14 years as a major league catcher with the Mariners, and was part of the 2001 team that won 116 regular season games.

Tyler Nevin

Tyler Nevin, Son of Phil Nevin

Tyler Nevin, a corner infielder, is the No. 12 prospect in the Colorado Rockies' organization. He homered 13 times and drove in 61 runs at Double-A in 2019. His father, Phil, spent seven years of his 13 major-league seasons with the San Diego Padres, even making an All-Star team in 2001. Phil, who homered 208 times in his career, is currently the third base coach for the New York Yankees.

Glenallen Hill Jr., Son of Glenallen Hill Sr.

Glenallen Hill Sr. homered 186 times in 13 major league seasons, and helped the New York Yankees to win the Subway Series in 2000. Now, his son, Glenallen Jr., is a prospect in the Arizona Diamondbacks' organization and was a fourth-round pick in 2019.
