9/11 families blast Boston-area club for hosting LIV Golf event

The International Golf Club in Bolton is facing protests from 9/11 families for hosting an event on the LIV Golf Invitational Series this weekend.

The Saudi-backed renegade league has sparked fury from 9/11 families since its launch earlier this year, including around the its third and most high-profile event, which was held in late July at Donald Trump's Bedminster golf club in New Jersey.

The families argue that Saudi Arabia is trying to "sportswash" its atrocious record on human rights and role in the 9/11 terrorist attacks that killed 2,977 Americans. Newly released declassified FBI documents indicate there was a larger link between Saudi Arabia and the hijackers than previously known.

A group called 9/11 Justice released an ad Wednesday calling on people to contact the International Club and express their opposition to LIV's tournament.

"This is blood money," says one of the family members featured in the ad.

"How much money to turn your back on your own country?," asks another.

The International fell into bankruptcy two years ago after struggling during the height of the pandemic. Escalante Golf purchased the property in late 2020 for $10 million.

The club is situated less than 50 miles from Boston's Logan Airport, where two of the four hijacked planes took off.
