Matt Grzelcyk returned to the Bruins lineup Thursday night after missing the last two games with a lower-body injury. Now he's likely going to miss at least one more game after suffering a different lower-body injury.
It's unclear exactly what happened in this case. Grzelcyk's final shift of the game came late in the second period when he took a holding penalty, but he didn't appear to be in any visible pain either on the ice or in the penalty box when the camera cut to him.
However, Grzelcyk, who also had an assist in the 4-1 win, did not return to the ice or the penalty box for the start of the third period, with Craig Smith serving the remainder of the penalty. The Bruins announced he would not return due to a lower-body injury.
While the initial thought was that perhaps Grzelcyk re-aggravated the injury he was already dealing with, coach Bruce Cassidy said after the game that it was a different injury.
Cassidy said Grzelcyk would likely miss Saturday's game against the Capitals and that he is considered "day-to-day" for now.
It's the third time Grzelcyk has been banged up just in the last week and a half. Last Monday, he suffered some sort of upper-body injury after getting tangled up with an Islanders playing and falling awkwardly. He missed the rest of that game, but returned for the Bruins' next game.
During that next game, though, he lost his edge while retrieving a puck in the corner and crashed awkwardly into the boards. He returned to that game, but wound up missing the Bruins' next two games as a result.
Connor Clifton filled in for him during the games he missed and played well, and would presumably be the first choice to play Saturday as well.
