In an already busy day, the Bruins have now added in a trade, sending goalie Dan Vladar to the Calgary Flames in exchange for a 2022 third-round pick.
Vladar, 23, had a 2-2-1 record with an. 886 save percentage in his first NHL action last season. He would have needed to clear waivers to be sent down to AHL Providence this season. By trading him now, the Bruins avoid potentially losing him for nothing later.
The Bruins also officially announced five free-agent signings, including goalie Linus Ullmark on a four-year deal with an average annual value of $5 million. They also signed another goalie, Troy Grosenick, to a one-year, two-way deal.
Barring another move, this would all set up the Bruins with a goaltending tandem of Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman to start the season.
Tuukka Rask recently underwent hip surgery and likely won't be able to return until January or February, if he does indeed want to return. It's possible the Bruins could still leave the door open for Rask to re-sign down the line, but signing Ullmark helps solidify the position regardless of his status.
There had been some thought the Bruins might start Swayman in the AHL with Vladar as the NHL No. 2, but that now seems unlikely following the Vladar trade.
