The Bruins have the fifth-best record in the NHL since Jan. 1, but many are still skeptical of their chances of competing for the Stanley Cup, even if they make a big move before the March 21 trade deadline.
Count Mike Milbury among those skeptics. During his weekly appearance on The Greg Hill Show on Thursday, Milbury said that while he’d be fine with making a smaller move or two to tinker with the roster, he still wouldn’t go all-in.
“Have I changed my mind and think they’re real contenders? No,” Milbury said. “But at least they’re looking like they can play with some of these other teams. They still have to go against some real iron. So where does that leave you? You don’t really want to leave your team out to dry when they’re playing as well as this and [Jeremy] Swayman is playing like a number one goaltender.
“I guess I’d look around and tinker a little bit. I’m not going to make a major deal. … I’m not going to go out and spend all of my savings on something for a team that I think has played much better, but I don’t really find them a threat to be a championship team.”
Milbury acknowledged that a left-shot defenseman to play next to Charlie McAvoy or a No. 2 center like Claude Giroux would be a big help to the Bruins, but he doesn’t think either would put them over the top, and therefore still wouldn’t mortgage the future.
“If you’re trading for Claude Giroux and you’re going to give up two first-round picks or whatever the hell it is you’d have to give up for him, I wouldn’t do it,” he said. “But if you can find some prospect and a pick that you can give away and give your team some believability and hope they can maybe pull an upset, I might be willing to do that.”
