The Bruins are firmly in the playoffs as they hit the All-Star break. They’re currently seventh in the Eastern Conference on points percentage and are nine points ahead of ninth-place Detroit with four games in hand.

The consensus seems to be that they’ll be buyers before the trade deadline, at least to some extent, as they try to set themselves up for another run while they still have Patrice Bergeron. Can this team really be a true Stanley Cup contender though?

Despite a 12-4-1 record since Jan. 1, Mike Milbury still doesn’t think so. Making his weekly appearance on The Greg Hill Show, Milbury said that while the Bruins will probably try to add, he thinks tearing things down and starting the rebuild should still be in play regardless of where they are in the standings.

“I would say that by now, you should have a pretty realistic view of your team,” he said. “It’s well into the season, even if in the pandemic era, it’s kind of difficult, disjointed. But they should know pretty much what they want to hang onto. Should they get rid of some of their key assets? Is it time to rebuild?

“I think that conversation has to still be going on in the Bruins’ office, but I do think they believe they can summon up enough energy and enough resources, maybe with an additional defenseman or two, to make it past the first round of the playoffs. But if they’re thinking they’re gonna go to a Stanley Cup Final, then they’re smoking dope.”

Milbury said earlier this season that the Bruins should consider trading Patrice Bergeron and/or Brad Marchand.
