The Bruins are set to make their longest road trip of the season this weekend when they head to Lake Tahoe to take on the Flyers in a special NHL Outdoors game Sunday at 3 p.m.

Usually the NHL's outdoor games take place in baseball or football stadiums filled with anywhere from 35-100,000 fans, as was the case with the three Winter Classics the Bruins have played in at Fenway Park, Gillette Stadium and Notre Dame Stadium.

But with no fans or only a small number of fans currently allowed at games due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NHL opted for a much more scenic, wide-open venue this season.

The NHL Outdoors games -- which also include Colorado and Vegas playing on Saturday at 3 p.m. -- will take place on a rink constructed on the 18th fairway of the Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Stateline, Nevada, on the south shore of Lake Tahoe, with the lake and surrounding mountains serving as the picturesque backdrop.

The Flyers haven't played since Feb. 7 due to a COVID-19 outbreak and still have seven players on the protocol list, but they finally returned to practice on Tuesday and are expected to play Thursday night and then make the trip to Tahoe, barring any further setbacks.

Several photos of the Tahoe setup have emerged over the last couple days as the finishing touches are put on, and it's clear that we're all in for a viewing treat. It also looks like the weather will be perfect, as the current forecast for Sunday calls for clear skies and a high of 44 degrees.
