The rumors and reports keep on rolling, and here's a new one involving the Bruins. According to multiple reports, the Bruins are expected to show interest in free-agent center Ryan Getzlaf.
Sportsnet radio host Nick Alberga was the first to report that the Bruins and Nashville Predators are "teams to watch closely on the Ryan Getzlaf front." The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta adds that the Bruins are "waiting to approach Getzlaf right when the doors open."
Getzlaf is a potential future Hall of Famer whose resume includes a Stanley Cup back in 2007 and three top-10 finishes in Hart Trophy voting, but he's also 36 now and obviously not the player he was in his prime.
Getzlaf, who has spent his entire 16-year career in Anaheim, had career lows in goals, assists and points per game last season, recording five goals and 12 assists in 48 games.
It's possible Getzlaf still has enough in the tank to be a solid, veteran third-line center on a contender. If that's all the Bruins would be expecting from him, the interest makes sense.
But if the Bruins are eyeing Getzlaf to be a potential David Krejci replacement if Krejci doesn't return, that would seem to be wishful thinking. It would require a major bounce-back season for Getzlaf to be able to handle a second-line role at this point in his career.
