Having a live microphone around hockey players is always a dangerous proposition, something the NHL and viewers were reminded of Monday afternoon.
Late in the second period of the Bruins' home game against the Flyers, Nick Foligno got into a dust-up with Philadelphia forward Travis Konecny after Konecny threw a jab at him.
Foligno wanted to fight and actually did drop the gloves, but Konecny quickly thought better of the idea and backed away. The refs decided to simply even out the penalties, calling Konecny for roughing and Foligno for cross-checking, even though Foligno really didn't actually do much of anything.
Foligno took exception to the call and apparently felt like he didn't really get his money's worth. That's when the ref's mic picked up Foligno's profane commentary while the ref was announcing the penalties.
"So you're telling me I should just go f***ing pound his face in?," Foligno asked.
Oops! NESN's Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley had the only reaction needed for the moment, which was to laugh.
Speaking of laughs, the Bruins were well on their way to getting the final one Monday. They led 4-0 at the time of the exchange and 5-0 as of this story's posting. (Update: They ultimately won 6-0.)
Watch the video below. If you're at work, you might want to throw some headphones in or keep the volume down.
