Brad Stevens doesn't think the Celtics are done making moves. Acquiring a true big man off the bench seems like the one move left to make, with Robert Williams and Al Horford both set to remain in the starting lineup.
But while Boston's president of basketball operations knows there's still work to be done, he believes the Celtics already have someone who can fill the role Daniel Theis left vacant.
"We were really high on Luke (Kornet)," Stevens said Tuesday. "We've been really high on Luke. We thought he had a terrific G League season and think that he can step right in and be a passer and a ball-handler and a mover and a screener and a roller when need be.
"We'll probably add one more person that can play in that area, but we really believe in Luke not only as depth to fill out the roster, but also be ready to help us and help us win. I think he's at that stage where he can do that. But, we're still looking and we'll still add at least one more body at whatever we call the five position nowadays."
With Stevens stressing throughout the press conference the Celtics are best suited to play with smaller lineups while largely playing Williams when Horford is off the floor and vice versa, it might be challenging to bring in a true big. Despite the chance to contend for a title, what sounds like the makings of an extremely limited role might not be enticing for a true backup big. Although Stevens intends to add to that position, a midseason move might be the way to go for Boston when it comes to addressing this area.
Either way, relying on Kornet in any capacity seems like a major roll of the dice.
