The Celtics are turning their coaching room into a jock lounge.
And that's probably what's best for the team.
Former NBA player Aaron Miles is expected to be added to Ime Udoka's coaching staff, reports The Athletic. Recent Spurs staffer and ex-pro Garrett Jackson will be added as well.
Earlier this summer, the Celtics hired Damon Stoudamire to serve as an assistant.
Mills enjoyed an excellent college career at Kansas, leading the Jayhawks to the Final Four in 2002 and 2003. His NBA career only spanned 19 games with the Warriors during the 2005-06 season.
However, Mills spent a decade playing in Europe, where he was named MVP of the Russia Cup in 2013. He's been coaching since 2015, most recently with the Golden State Warriors' G League affiliate.
Jackson played college ball at USC and Saint Mary's before spending two seasons in Australia and one campaign in Germany.
When the Celtics hired Udoka, it came with the reported endorsements of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. In recent weeks, Tatum has spoken extensively about his bond with Udoka, for whom he played under with Team USA.
Udoka is a former pro himself, logging seven NBA seasons before joining the coaching ranks, where he learned under Gregg Popovich for seven years.
Given these hires, it's apparent Brad Stevens believes Brown and Tatum will benefit from having ex-players to lean on. Outside of Udoka, Stoudamire is the most newsworthy hire they've made. The point guard played 15 seasons in the NBA, averaging 13.4 points per game.
Most recently, he was the head men's basketball coach for Pacific University.
The Celtics seem to be valuing playing and coaching experience when filling out their new staff. It's hard to argue with that approach.
