For weeks, it was rumored Dennis Schroder would be traded at the deadline.
But did anyone see him going for Daniel Theis?
The Celtics reacquired the mediocre big man from the Rockets in exchange for Schroder, reports ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Schroder is on a one-year deal. Enes Freedom and Bruno Fernando are in the deal as well (Freedom was quickly waived).
Theis, conversely, is signed through 2024-25. Guard Derrick White, whom the Celtics acquired earlier Thursday, is also under contract through the 2024-25 season.
With Marcus Smart and White on the roster, Schroder was redundant. While he averaged 14.4 points per game, he failed to establish himself as a consistent sixth-man. There was some though he would produce a career year after mistakenly turning down the Lakers' $84 million extension, but those wishes never came to fruition.
Theis is an interesting addition. He's averaging 8.4 points and 5 rebounds per game off the bench for Houston, and could give the Celtics an interior anchor for their second unit.
Boston traded Theis to the Bulls at last season's deadline. The Rockets acquired him in a sign-and-trade last August, inking him to a $36 million extension in the process.
Now one year later, the Celtics are bringing him back.
