Celtics sign Joe Mazzulla to multi-year contract extension

On Friday, the Celtics announced head coach Joe Mazzulla had agreed to terms on a new multi-year contract extension.

The team said in a statement, “Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.”

“This is truly a blessing,” Mazzulla said in a statement through the team. “I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children. We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad’s mentorship, and the support of our staff. Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston.”

The 37-year-old is entering his seventh season with the Celtics after spending three years as an assistant coach under both Brad Stevens and Ime Udoka. Before his time on the bench in Boston, he served as an assistant coach for the G-League’s Maine Red Claws (now Maine Celtics). After being given the interim head coach title ahead of the 2022-23 season, Mazzulla was named the 19th head coach in franchise history in February of that season.

Here’s what the Celtics had to say about Mazzulla in their statement on Friday:

“In his first three seasons at the helm, Mazzulla owns a 182-64 regular season record (.740 winning percentage) and has gone 33-17 (.660) in the playoffs. He guided the team to the 2024 NBA Championship with a 16-3 postseason record (.842), the second-highest playoff winning percentage in the NBA since the first round expanded to a best-of-seven series in 2002-03. Mazzulla, a four-time Eastern Conference Coach of the Month recipient, became the youngest head coach to win the NBA Finals since the 1968-69 season, when 35-year-old Bill Russell led the Celtics to the NBA championship as a player-coach.”

Mazzulla grew up a Celtics fan, being born and raised in Johnston, RI just 56 miles south of Boston. He was a standout guard in high school while playing for his dad at Bishop Hendricken in Warwick, RI, and went on to play four years of college hoops at West Virginia for head coach Bob Huggins. In 2010, he helped lead the Mountaineers to their first Final Four run in 51 years as team captain during his junior season, losing to the eventual national champion Duke Blue Devils.

After winning the NBA Championship in his second full season as head coach of the Celtics in 2024, Mazzulla followed up that campaign with a second-round exit at the hands of the three-seeded Knicks this May.
