Jackie MacMullan highlights overlooked key for Joe Mazzulla, Celtics

After facing a lot of criticism at times last year, including during his team's Eastern Conference Finals loss to Miami, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla has silenced a lot of doubters in his second season in charge.

Boston still needs to finish the job in the NBA Finals, of course, but up to this point, there has been little to get on Mazzulla for. The Celtics had the best record in the NBA in the regular season, and they have gone 12-2 through three rounds of the playoffs.

Appearing on WEEI's Gresh & Fauria on Friday, legendary (and now retired) NBA writer Jackie MacMullan pointed out one major difference for Mazzulla that she believes has been largely overlooked.

"I've always been a fan of Joe Mazzulla," said MacMullan, who will be doing some TV work for 7News Boston during the Finals. "And here's the story that everybody in Boston -- I don't write anymore, but the rest of you guys should have been talking about it and writing about it, is very simply this: We know what happened with Ime Udoka. But then, not only did Joe Mazzulla get thrust suddenly into this head coaching job, he had a staff that was entirely Ime's.

"And then over the course of the year, one by one, they were literally dropping off in midseason. Damon Stoudamire, OK, he's your Sam Cassell this year. I'm not blaming Damon Stoudamire -- he had an opportunity, he took it. But the difference between the support Joe Mazzulla had last year and the support he has this year with this staff is night and day. He was thrown into the fire with none of the guys that he actually picked for himself.

"Now you bring in -- talk about adults in the room. Charles Lee, Sam Cassell. I'm not going to list the whole staff because they're all fantastic. Tony [Dobbins] is great. Craig [Luschenat] is great. They're all very, very good. But they're his staff, and they're in this together, and they're committed to staying in this together. And I just think that's been a very underplayed story when people talk about Joe Mazzulla."

MacMullan went on to share a great story about Mazzulla attending a fundraiser for Heather Walker, the former Celtics vice president of media relations who died in 2023 after a battle with cancer. Listen to the full interview above.
