Jayson Tatum likely to miss playoff game for first time in his career in Game 2 vs. Magic
The Celtics have played 114 playoff games since Tatum entered the league in 2017-18 — he's been available for all of them.
Tatum's 114 playoff appearances are the most of any player over that span. Only Tatum and his running mate, Jaylen Brown (108), have surpassed the century mark in that time.
That streak is in jeopardy for Game 2 against the Orlando Magic as the six-time All-Star is doubtful due to what the team has diagnosed as a right distal radius bone bruise.
Tatum suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Game 1 against the Magic, landing on his wrist after a flagrant foul by Magic forward Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, a foul Al Horford took exception with.
"There was something extra," Horford said of the foul. 'There was a lot – it was the second or third time that especially KCP went at him in that way. So yeah."
Tatum, who typically sticks around after practice, wasn't on the Auerbach Center floor during the portion open to the media after practice. But head coach Joe Mazzulla said he was able to go through some workouts.
"He was able to do some stuff," Mazzulla said. "He was sore after the game. It's gotten a little better today. He was able to do some on-court work, and we'll go from there."
The 27-year-old stayed in the game after the injury, scoring seven points on 3-of-5 shooting (60%) from the field and 1-of-2 (50%) from three while grabbing three rebounds in just over seven minutes. The soon-to-be five-time All-NBA wing confirmed after the game that X-rays came back clean.
"It's alright," Tatum said on his wrist after the game. "I landed on it and it was throbbing for a second and kind of went away."
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, it's a pain-tolerance injury for Tatum, who led the Celtics in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and minutes this season. He's the only player on Boston's injury report.
The Celtics went 8-2 without Tatum in the regular season — but both losses came against the Magic. The second of those came with the entire top six (White, Holiday, Brown, Tatum, Porzingis, Horford) out.
Game 2 is set for Wednesday night at TD Garden. Tip-off at 7 p.m. ET.
