NBA Finals odds: Celtics are (barely) in top half of contenders entering next season

The NBA Finals odds are in for next season. And the Celtics are in the top half of title contenders!

Well, they’re barely in the upper-half, as Westgate SuperBooks gives them the 14th-best odds (+5000) to capture the championship in 2022-23.

But it’s better than being in the bottom half.

Despite Giannis Antetokounmpo being in the prime of his career, the Bucks own the fourth-best odds at +1000. That’s a little puzzling, considering Milwaukee is primed to return its entire core next season.

The Nets (+300), Lakers (+400) and Warriors (+800) are at the top of the list. The Bucks eliminated the Nets in a thrilling seven-game semifinal, though Brooklyn was playing without Kyrie Irving. The Lakers were also hampered by injuries, as were the Warriors. Klay Thompson last played in 2019.

Obviously, these odds will change as the season approaches. The Western Conference seems wide open, and one blockbuster move could vault several Eastern Conference teams to the top of the pile. For example: If the 76ers can acquire Damian Lillard, they would probably be favorites alongside Brooklyn and Milwaukee. They currently have the 7th-best odds (+2000).

As for the Celtics, they likely won’t be anybody’s favorite heading into the season. But Brad Stevens has demonstrated he’s committed to remaking the roster. Who knows where they could land?

It will probably be as far as Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown (and hopefully another running mate) takes them.
