Celtics make NBA history as Kristaps Porzingis is named Eastern Conference Player of the Week
The Boston Celtics have dominated the NBA's In-Season Awards.
Last week, Joe Mazzulla earned his second Coach of the Month honor this season. Jayson Tatum has also shone, claiming Eastern Conference Player of the Month honors twice. Additionally, Tatum, along with Jaylen Brown and Derrick White, has received recognition as Player of the Week.
Adding to their accolades, Kristaps Porzingis joined the ranks of honored Celtics on Monday. Porzingis was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the first week of April, marking his fourth career Player of the Week award. Hailing from Latvia, he becomes the fourth Celtic to win the weekly honor this season, solidifying the Celtics as the first team in NBA history to have four different players win Player of the Week in a single season since the award's inception in 1979-80.
The 7-foot-2 big man helped the Celtics to a 4-0 week with wins over the Hornets, Thunder, Kings, and Trail Blazers. Over that span, Porzingis averaged 19.8 points on 65.9% shooting from the field and 63.6% from distance, along with 10 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.5 steals, and 3.0 blocks.
He was the only player to shoot 65.0% from the field and 63.0% from three-point range in at least 25.0 minutes per game. Additionally, his 12 blocks led the Eastern Conference and trailed only Victor Wembanyama (19) for the league lead. They were the only players to record double-digit blocks.
Other players in the East who were nominated for the honor include the Orlando Magic's Paolo Banchero, Knicks' Jalen Brunson, 76ers' Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, and Pacers' Tyrese Halliburton.
Although Porzingis, in his typical, humble demeanor, is likely appreciative of the award, his eyes are set on something bigger, and he is excited to get a chance to play postseason basketball again.
"Last year, I was sitting back home in Latvia, just following the results and watching the games and stuff," Porzingis said Sunday night. "I'm thinking to myself like, 'Of course it's nice to finish the season early, but there's nothing else to do.' What is there better to do than to play basketball? Nothing. Yeah, you can go for a little vacation. But this is what I love to do."
"I love basketball so much — especially playing here and playing in the postseason is going to be incredible," the big man added. "I'm looking forward to that. Of course, it's going to be hard. It's going to be tough physically and mentally. But if we want to achieve what we want to achieve, then it's not going to be easy. We have to come up with that, for sure."
Porzingis has made the postseason just twice in his seven-year career and has never advanced past the first round -- That is destined to change this year.
