How can the Celtics build around Mazzulla ball?
The Celtics are getting Joe Mazzulla some help. According to Shams Charania, Sam Cassell has agreed to join Boston's coaching staff under Mazzulla.
Cassell brings 16 years of NBA playing experience and 14 years of assistant coaching experience to the Celtics. He most recently spent three years as an assistant in Philadelphia under Doc Rivers, whom he also worked for from 2014-20 with the Clippers.
Cassell began his coaching career in 2009 as an assistant with the Wizards shortly after retiring as a player. His final stop as a player was, of course, Boston, where he helped the Celtics win the title in 2008. Cassell also won two championships with the Rockets in 1994 and 1995.
Cassell's name has been popping up in head coaching rumors for years, including in Boston prior to its hiring of Ime Udoka in 2021, but he has yet to land a head job.
This move could be a win-win for everyone. The Celtics get an experienced coach who can help Mazzulla and connect with players, and Cassell gets to join a team with championship aspirations and potentially boost his own credentials even more.
