Another Boston sports owner wants to buy a Premier League club

Another Boston sports owner wants to get into the soccer business. Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca said Thursday he will make a "substantial and credible bid proposal" for the historic Chelsea team of the Premier League, the Globe reports.

Pagliuca is heading a group of potential buyers, which is believed to include Larry Tanenbaum, owner of the Raptors, and Bob Iger, former CEO of Disney. They are one of four finalists in the bidding.

The Chelsea board of governors is slated to send its pick to the British government for final approval Monday.

Buying Chelsea would be quite an opportunistic coup for Pagliuca. The club's owner, Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, put Chelsea on the market after the British government froze his assets due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Chelsea has won six world titles in the Premier League, and is the reigning Champions League winner. The estimated selling price of the club ranges from $2 billion to $5 billion.

John Henry purchased Liverpool in 2010 when it was on the verge of bankruptcy. The club is now worth $4.2 billion, according to Forbes.
