Eagles linebacker apologizes for racial slurs in old posts

Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nathan Gerry apologized on Thursday after several old social media posts in which he used racist language were resurfaced.

Gerry took to social media to say he was "disappointed in myself" and "downright sick" over tweets dating back to 2011 and 2012 in which he used variations of the N-word.

"I have been made aware of some offensive social media posts I sent out many years ago," Gerry said.

"I take full accountability and apologize to the organization, to my teammates, our fans, our community and everyone who I have offended by these incredibly insensitive and harmful posts."

A user appeared to have captured the posts in question before they were deleted.

Gerry, 25, was roughly 16 and 17 when he published the posts.

The Eagles condemned the posts in a statement released on Thursday night.

"We were very disappointed to learn of Nate Gerry's insensitive social media posts," the statement said. "We do not condone or support that type of behavior in any way, and we have discussed this matter with Nate privately. He understands that his actions were offensive and harmful, and that the language he used is unacceptable."

The Eagles drafted Gerry, a Nebraska product, in the fourth round in 2017.

The problematic remarks mark at least the third such troubling incident for the Eagles in recent years. In 2013, wide receiver Riley Cooper was caught on camera using the N-word at a country music concert, and earlier this year wide receiver DeSean Jackson apologized for boosting an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory.

The 25-year-old Gerry has been a favorite target of frustrated Eagles fans for his apparent on-field struggles this season, though defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz recently defended his play.
