Fenway Park to host first bowl game this December

It may sound like someplace you'd take the family before or after a Sox game at the ballpark, but in fact it'll be a different game, at America's most beloved ballpark. The kind of sport you'd never think would fit there, considering how tough it is for the average fan to fit in the seats.

Starting this Dec. 29, Fenway Park is set to play host to the Fenway Bowl, an annual college football game that will take place between an AAC and and an ACC team. This won't be the first football game played at Fenway, as the ballpark has hosted gridiron contests by the diamond since it opened in 1912. This will not only be the first Fenway Bowl, it will be the first Division One bowl game ever played in New England. So it's got that going for it, which is nice.

Participants for the game will be chosen based on regular season wins and losses, as well as geographic proximity, matchups and previous appearances.  The game was set to debut last December but was postponed due to COVID-19.

The conference participants means that Boston College could technically play in sort of a home game for a bowl game, which could add to the holiday excitement.

Fenway Bowl joins a full bowl game lineup set to return this winter after a pandemic-shortened lineup last season, and will be broadcast on ESPN at 11am, the rare Wednesday brunch time football game in a baseball park. Play ball!
