It is high! It is far! It … already happened.
John Sterling bellowed out his classic home run call Wednesday during the Yankees' 5-4 victory over the Mariners at Safeco Field. The problem is, the home run occurred earlier in the game. Unbeknown to Sterling, the 82-year-old broadcaster was narrating a replay of Aaron Judge's second-inning blast later in the contest.
Sterling eventually caught himself, but it took a few seconds. Sterling and Suzyn Waldman aren't traveling with the Yankees this season, and thus, are calling road games from monitors.
"Unfortunately, that was a replay of the home run," Sterling said. "But it was a good replay. I'm sorry, it's on the monitor. What am I supposed to do?"
Maybe understand the difference between a replay and live action? It doesn't seem like that difficult of an endeavor.
Waldman, who's expressed her frustration about not traveling with the team, didn't hide her agitation. "This is a great way to do a game, isn't it?," she said.
There are about 8-12 radio broadcast teams currently doing full-time or limited travel, reports Andrew Marchand of the New York Post. More are expected after the All-Star Break.
The Red Sox radio team isn't traveling with the club, either, which is why Rob Bradford and Will Flemming were leaving Fenway in the wee hours of the morning during Boston's recent series against the Angels.
Thankfully, there weren't any replay snafus during the broadcasts. That's called true professionalism.
