Mookie Betts isn't having his typical stellar season — his .253 batting average would be the lowest of his career, and his name hasn't been in the mix for the MVP Award all that much, which is unusual for him. In fact, he currently has +6000 odds, which is behind names like Bryce Harper and Trea Turner. It's not that he's having a bad year, either, seeing as his 3.0 bWAR is sixth among position players in the National League to this point. But anything short of exceptional means that Betts is falling short of expectations, and he'll have to get hot in the second half to bring his numbers up to the norm.
But he doesn't have to be playing at his best to put on a show, at least in one way or another. He did hit a home run in the bottom of the first, but that's not the highlight we're focusing on. Instead, we're going the more obscure route, picking something that doesn't show up in the box score and perhaps not on any of Betts' highlight reels down the road, but something that was all-too interesting to completely forget about.
A mid-at-bat, mid-air vertical bunt to himself in order to gain control of a loose ball that Posey himself couldn't contain? That's pretty impressive stuff. Somehow, the stars seem to just do weird, kinda jaw-dropping stuff like this. Whether it's Luka Doncic showing off his soccer skills, or it's Mike Trout hitting a golf ball somewhere around seven miles, these dudes are freak athletes with the strength, balance, coordination and overall mechanics to pull off these types of things on the regular.
And then there are those instances of complete, unadulterated luck — but that doesn't make them any less entertaining.
