The Trey Lance era is officially under way in San Francisco it could not be off to a better start.
The rookie quarterback threw his first career touchdown on his first career pass attempt to put the 49ers up 7-0 in the first quarter against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan was rotating in Lance with starter Jimmy Garoppolo for the series and put the rookie in a first-and-goal situation from the Detroit five-yard line.
Lance ran a play-action from the shotgun and turned to his left where he found fourth-year wide receiver Trent Sherfield wide open at the 3-yard line and connected with him for an easy touchdown.
Shanahan had used Lance and Garoppolo in a rotation during a preseason game and would not rule that out as a possibility during the regular season under the right circumstances.
Lance had came in earlier in the series as well and ran for a one-yard gain on a first-and-10. Garoppolo came back in and converted a third-and-6 which set up Lance’s return to the series for a touchdown.

The 49ers traded a large haul to land Lance in the draft and the rookie impressed in camp with many making the argument he should be the Week 1 starter.
Garoppolo also played well in camp and preseason but will be under a close microscope with Lance waiting in the wings.
The 29-year-old veteran did not have a great start on Sunday, though, losing a fumble on his first snap of the game.
