Sunday could very well be Cam Newton's final game with the Patriots.
Speaking on ESPN's NFL Countdown Sunday morning, Adam Schefter said it's looking like the Patriots will move on from Newton and search for a new quarterback for 2021.
“Cam Newton sounded resigned this week to the fact that he’ll be moving on from New England,” Schefter said. “It looks like he’s looking for something different, the Patriots are looking for something different.
“Both sides enjoyed their relationship, but both sides expect that it will take them to a different place and a different direction in 2021 with Cam Newton likely moving on and the Patriots in search of a new quarterback for next season. We’ll see what direction they decide to go.”
[UPDATE 5:15 p.m.]: Via ESPN's Mike Reiss, Schefter says this was not a report, and just part of a discussion.
Newton is a free agent after the season after signing a one-year deal late last summer.
The Patriots have Jarrett Stidham under contract, but based on Schefter's quote it does not appear the team believes he can be its starter in 2021.
Finding a quarterback is one of, if not the biggest, needs for the Patriots this offseason.
